Development of lightweight commmunications terminals could transcend military use

A DARPA-funded technology contract aimed at improving satellite communications among warfighters has applications that transcend the battlefield for use in the commercial marketplace.

LGS Innovations, a Herndon, Virginia-based technology company that traces its heritage to the Bell Labs innovation incubator, is drawing on that heritage and its own investments to develop lightweight laser-communications terminals for eventual spaceflight tests on a pair of DARPA spacecraft that weigh less than 100 lbs. each.
