Alcatel-Lucent 5ESS-2000 Switch

Although there is a general move toward a more mobile and wireless workforce, wireline voice networks remain a critical part of government and commercial communications. As more investment is directed toward future telecommunications technologies, cost-effective options for switch replacement and office consolidation are a must.

The 5ESS-2000 Switch is a multifunctional, digital, time division multiplexed (TDM) switching system that links communications devices into the public switched telephone network: this includes telephones, computers, faxes, data systems, and other communications devices. With the capacity and flexibility to support multiple applications, including wireline, wireless, voice, data and video, the 5E product family provides more than 300 voice calling features to support an array of applications.

The 5E Switch product family consists of the following:

  • 5ESS-2000 Switch: supports a large number of users (more than 25,000 lines);
  • CDX (Compact Digital Exchange) Switch: supports midsize user needs (8,000 to 12,000 lines) with remote switching unit requirements;
  • VCDX (Very Compact Digital Exchange) Switch: for customers needing between 2,000 and 8,000 lines.

Remote wireline voice switching requirements are supported by 5E EXM-2000 (Extended Remote Switch Module) and 5E DRM (Distant Remote Switching Module). The EXM-2000 can be extended up to 600 miles from the hosting 5E network; the DRM can be extended up to 2,000 miles from the hosting 5E network.

System attributes include high-reliability hardware, software and data infrastructure; scalable ports and processing; multi-media interfaces; and node and network configurations.

5ESS has a distributed modular architecture, ensuring high capacity, reliability, remoting up to 2,000 miles from the host, and the ability to easily incorporate new technology. Specific modules include the following:

  • Administrative Module (AM): one central point for Operation, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAM&P) of the switch

o   Provides interface to the people running the 5ESS switch to supply information on:
– Health of the switch
– Information on hardware
– Performance of routine checks
– Office and billing records

o   Provides the ability to add/change/delete lines and trunks

o   Stores critical information used by the switch

o   Works with an element called Common Network Interface (CNI) ring and provides signaling information for calls going out of the switch

  • Communications Module (CM): low-delay tandem function; center-stage time slot and hunting that switches voice, data traffic and control messages between SM, CM and AM

o   Manages physical interconnections that support communication between and among Switching Modules (SM) and Administrative Module (AM)

o   Distributes timing and synchronization data throughout the switch with speed

  • Switching Module (SM2000): autonomous operation; local or remote

o   Performs 95% of Call Processing Functions Including:
– Origination and termination of calls
– Feature control
– Routing calls

o   Provides dial tone and calling features

o   Terminates subscriber lines and trunks
– Analog Lines and Trunks
– ISDN Lines (Custom and National)
– Digital Lines (TR008 and TR303)
– DS1, STS-1, ADSL and OC3 Trunk Interfaces

o   Converts Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog signals

Why is 5E Technology the Best Solution?

The 5ESS Switch is certified as interoperable with the Defense Switched Network (DSN) by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) and the Defense Information System Network Security Accreditation Working Group (DSAWG). As a result, this product is on the DoD Approved Products List (APL).

The JITC-certified elements for the 5ESS Switch included:

  • The full 5ESS Switch configuration
  • The cost-reduced Compact Digital eXchange (CDX)
  • The Very Compact Digital eXchange (VCDX) configurations
  • The Administrative Services Module (ASM)
  • The EXtended Switch Module (EXM)
  • The Distinctive Remote Module (DRM)

Note: The EXM and DRM are Remote Switch Units (RSU) that feature fully functional operation in standalone mode.

The 5ESS (Electronic Switching System) Switch has been a premier digital voice network solution for more than 30 years. This type of voice switch is designed on the TDM (Time-Division Multiplexed) platform.

The 5ESS-2000 Switch gives the customer total network flexibility. As government and enterprise sites have varying voice network requirements, the 5E solution can be scaled for very small applications (e.g., 2,000 lines) up to large-scale applications (e.g., more than 25,000 lines).
