Herndon, VA (14 June, 2010) – LGS Innovations (LGS), an independent U.S. subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent serving the U.S. federal government, today announced that LGS and the AFCEA Educational Foundation co-sponsored a $1,000 academic grant to a schoolteacher on the U.S. territory of Guam. The scholarship was presented by Paul Remick, LGS employee and member of the AFCEA Education Committee. Greg Folta of St. John’s School, the grant recipient, plans to use the grant to purchase Lego® Mindstorms Robotics Kits for his 250 students—as well in a robotics club he manages.
“When teachers integrate technology into their classrooms, students become engaged at much higher levels—improving their achievement levels and positioning them for even greater success,” said Kevin L. Kelly, Vice President of Strategy at LGS Innovations. “This grant enables LGS to positively transform the learning process for both students and educators.”
“I am so excited to be able to introduce a new learning opportunity that isn’t normally available to schools in Guam,” said Greg Folta. “The children will enjoy using the robotic tools that the grant provided. Students are always eager to explore and robotics will be a great asset to our school community!”
In total, four $1,000 academic grants were presented to support Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) teachers on Guam. Three of the four grants were awarded by the Marianas chapter of AFCEA. Two presentations were made during a luncheon for participants at the TechNet 2010 conference; additional presentations were made by Guam Governor Felix Camacho during an evening reception at Government House, the Governor’s official residence.
AFCEA International, established in 1946, is a non-profit membership association serving the military, government, industry, and academia as an ethical forum for advancing professional knowledge and relationships in the fields of communications, IT, intelligence, and global security.
