Internet Protocol Television (IPTV)

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is widely adopted and accepted as a viable solution to deliver HDTV, Video on Demand (VoD) and time-shifted TV. In the consumer market, users have achieved a 50 million subscriber rate, and predictions are for triple growth within the U.S. by 2013.

For the U.S. Federal Government, IPTV is used for focused video delivery and provides a much more flexible and focused video system than is provided using terrestrial, cable, or satellite TV. IPTV delivers applications such as live or recorded distance learning, focused base commander briefings, base announcements, video surveillance, medical applications, live video feeds, and specialized video on demand.

Benefits of IPTV

IPTV has been accepted in the public and private sectors as a highly available, robust and cost effective platform for the delivery of video content. With broad deployment across the U.S. Federal Government, IPTV has illustrated a significant cost savings over conventional CCTV systems due to the ability to utilize the embedded base network infrastructure as the transport medium, making every data port a video content delivery port.

Another key benefit of IPTV is distribution. Conventional coax systems are restricted to those end points that have expensive and leased set-top boxes. Typically, a monitor connected to the coax run is where video is distributed. With an IPTV design, the video content is delivered over the existing base data or LAN infrastructure, allowing any Ethernet port to be a video content delivery port. This removes any restriction in having a set-top box and allows interfacing directly to the user PC port. Additionally, a coax wired network no longer has to be managed nor expanded to include additional users.

Within the U.S. Federal Government, IPTV has seen a rise in the variety of focused applications. IPTV has been used in specialized applications such as live or recorded distance learning, base commander briefings, base announcements, video surveillance, medical applications, live video feeds, and video telepresence.
