The U.S. Federal Government, and particularly the military, frequently operates in high terrain and remote settings that require a high-speed communications network. Given the bandwidth-intensive nature of today’s communications requirements, the networks must be highly reliable, safe and secure, quickly and easily deployed, able to overcome geographic obstacles, able to scale when needed, and cost-effective.

Microwave transport is a choice selection for transport technology. For high terrain or extremely remote areas, transmission designs featuring wireless networks have proven to be more cost-effective than new wireline facilities, which incur high labor and deployment costs. Key factors such as rights of way, availability of power along the right of way, trenching, and cable procurement do not become issues with microwave wireless network systems.

The software tools used by LGS Innovations provide the most accurate and stringent analysis of a microwave path design to improve microwave radio communications. These tools are not commercially available and are specifically profiled to analyze the performance of the recommended microwave radios and antenna systems. The tools are based on the Vigants reliability model and incorporate a 50-year database of regional rain coefficients, the most detailed and realistic in the industry. This database links to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) data files for site coordinates as well as the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 30-meter terrain database to develop accurate path profiles to ensure “five nines” (99.999 percent) availability as specified. Using these tools provides more accurate modeling of the network design parameters to more precisely ensure that “five nines” reliability can be supported for each microwave path; and more accurate definition of antenna sizes, antenna centerlines, and tower requirements to reduce post-award increases in scope or other changes.

Proven Success in Microwave Radio Communications

 Digital Microwave Radio Communications Network, Iraqi Republic Railroad (IRR), Iraq

  • Engineering design to furnish, install and test a new digital microwave radio communications network. Included microwave radios, 33 towers, 33 antenna systems and 33 environmentally controlled (transportable) equipment shelters and 33 backup emergency generators.
  • Involved 1,200 miles interconnecting 33 railway stations from Turkey in the North (Rabiya) across Iraq to the Persian Gulf (Umm Qasr), in remote desert areas and through congested residential areas

U.S. Geological Survey Microwave Replacement System, Calif.

  • End-to-end solution to move communications network out of the existing 1.710 to 1.755 GHz spectrum including evaluation, design, installation, testing and user training without disruption to the existing network.
  • Work performed in a highly volatile location affected by unexpected earthquakes, mudslides, and flooding.

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) Communications, Wyo.

  • Engineered, furnished and installed backbone hops at the power plants, with connectivity to the local switchyards and connectivity back to the new communications backbone.
  • Area of connectivity through Seminoe, Kortez, Glendo Canyon, Gurnsey, Alcova, Pathfinders, Yellowtail, Shoshone, Bighorn and other reservoirs in Wyoming and Montana.

U.S. Army, Okinawa Digital Microwave Upgrade (ODMU), Japan

  • Design and deployment of microwave communications system for the U.S. Army in Okinawa.
  • Work performed in both congested areas and spread across long distances.  Additional microwave links were installed between Okinawa and Ie-Shima, an island nine miles off shore.

Central Iraq Microwave System (CIMS), Multiple Locations

  • Engineered, furnished, and installed a data network for all Iraqi ministries (DOD Wireless Broadband Project).
  • This area is one of the world’s most hostile environments; a war-ravaged country with remote and desert terrain.

Iraq Advanced First Responder Network (AFRN)

  • Engineer, furnish, install, test and maintain a turnkey system) for the Iraq emergency organization, including police, fire, and other Iraqi safety organizations.
  • Multiple base stations, switching offices, and dispatch centers for the 16 largest cities in Iraq (approximate size of California).
